breeding mealworms and waxworms

alimx Aug 22, 2003 05:12 PM

I've done some reading online and I'm getting ready to start breeding my own. The main thing I'm concerned with is the 3 tier drawer system - don't the beetles crawl out? If I remember right they don't seal when they close. I'm not particulary fond of beetles, although I'll deal with them to feed the kiddo (Wood Turtle).

Also, does anyone have any information about breeding waxworms? I haven't been able to find much info about them online.

Thanks!!
Alison

The beetles can't climb smooth plastic surfaces. I keep both my Mealies and my Superworm colonies in the drawer systems you can get at a Family Dollar Store for between $5 and $8. Haven't had any escapees yet. Darkling Beetles (Mealworms) don't fly usually... and they don't have the ability to climb smooth surfaces that some insects do. You're pretty safe with them.
