New Owner, Hatchling Gopher Question

HandInTheFlame Oct 15, 2007 09:19 AM

Hey guys,
So we picked up an albino gopher at the Tinley Park show last Saturday. Now, I've read about hatchlings being sort of agressive, but I've never had one, so I don't know if the extent of her aggression is normal. She sits in her cage with no one anywhere near hear, and sits completely s'ed up and striking and hissing like no one's business. We've been able to take her out and she seems calm while being held, but absolutely does not want anyone coming anywhere near her cage or reaching in her cage. We double checked temps, they're sitting a little above 80 and around 75, she has a nice hide and water and everything... Her cage isn't very elaborate, and it's pretty small (plastic shoe box, standard hatchling size).
The plan right now is to let her settle in a little more and then try to teach her that hands coming into her cage doesn't mean danger (while she's still little enough that getting tagged doesn't hurt)... Does anyone have any tips?
Thanks in advance

Good looking snake. I'd just say give her more time to settle in. I've had a hissy, seemingly perpetually irritated baby Gopher, and it took several months for the snake to calm down and "warm up" to being in its surroundings. I've heard captives Gophers can behave like that.

Seems pretty normal to me. Just give her time and she should settle down.
