Could someone explain??

zefdin Oct 15, 2007 10:41 AM

What is the point of having a Morph that no one knows how its made?

I guess if you want it as a pet and no one else will own one, thats pretty cool?

But if you want to sell the thing who would want to buy something, not knowing what they are getting? Maybe you buy it for big $$ and find out you had the ingredients to make one all along and you just werent putting the right combination together? That would suck and get the person P'd off no?

I really dont get this idea? The incredible odds and unique genetic variations are what make the things cool and sought after in the first place. If no one knows how its made, how do you know it isnr really easy to create and you just dont know it?

Maybe its me??

Its a decent question...my first thought (playing Devil's Advocate) is that they want to create a good number of them first because once the ingredients are released then the market will soon be flooded with "said" new morph. Why not get your stock filled with them before everyone else gets the chance too. That way you have the upper hand to sell off your stock before everyone and their mom has them as well.

Just a thought...

You are talking about morphs that are many years in the making. When putting 3 and four different genes into one snake that is alot of years of hard work.

I think half the fun is trying to figure out what it is and then attempting to duplicate. Who knows, in the process you may come up with something you like a little more.

Not to mention that the "Secret stuff" isnt being marketed for sale in the first place.

And if in a particular case it is, then the person with the big $$$ to spend will be let in on what it is..but then, I wouldnt expect you to know anything about big $$$ deals, or marketing strategies

Some people just dont get it....

And by the way, anyone with half an eye for Ball pythons can easily decipher how these "secrets" are made... but I guess if you can't even tell what's in a 2 way cross without being told, you wouldnt have much luck with that, either...

"anyone with half an eye for Ball pythons can easily decipher how these "secrets" are made"

so by the tone of your post I'd say you half at least half an eye for ball pythons. Perhaps you could enlighten us with all of your knowledge to what Nerd's Inferno is.

Exactly, I didnt want to say it...

The Super Stripe...that would have been real easy to figure out.

I guess you have to have the "eye for it"...

Lol....

It's not so cut and dry when it comes to guessing at the animals that Kevin at NERD has been hatching the last couple of years...

How can I guess what the secret seasoning is when half of your spice rack is an un-labeled mystery?? lol

People actually buying the morphs will know how they are made.

Is the person who buys the snake allowed to tell?

How would one enforce a sercrecy stipulation when they sold the snake?

If not, wouldnt the secret be out after you sold even one of them?

pfan151 Oct 15, 2007 12:58 PM

It is up to that person if he wants to tell or not. The ONLY way to protect a project is to keep it a secret as long as possible. Of course at some point the ingredients will come out but delaying it for a season or 2 lets the first person that produced it get a little more of a head start on the project.

Protective marketing and pricing over time is something else I find interesting.

Seems to me that a protected project might be a little more risky. If the price is held artificially high for any reason who knows if the eventual correction to free market will happen right after you buy in. I'm sure the rewards are great if you are one of the first producers but if you are lower on the pyramid you take a lot of risk for your possibility of reward.

There where other factors involved (like nice combos) but I think ghosts have been very profitable for a larger number of breeders than most projects. Perhaps starting out a little under rather than over appreciated prevented as much effort from going into early proliferation.

I do think price drops are inevitable but ideally should be slow and even so that all those who produce do well.

toshamc Oct 15, 2007 12:34 PM

There are lots of things people are holding onto - not everything that comes in from Africa gets released to the general public - and that is likely what will keep the industry afloat.

IMO - no harm no foul - if someone wants to work with genes and make really nifty combos for a bit before releasing the ingredients into the general populous - half the fun is speculation and anticipation. If you were to buy into such a project then I'm sure you would be privy to the ingredients - or perhaps it might be more fun to take the combo morph down to it's basics for yourself.

Depends on the type of person you are - I guess.

happens all the time in other businesses. but you cant copyright a snake. have to keep its ingredients secret. it is a shrewd business move. it has been said that the ingredients will be revealed in time. if you already know, great. if you dont, wait. or buy one.

RandyRemington Oct 15, 2007 12:58 PM

It would be interesting to see how the two different strategies work out. Maybe the buyers with the big bucks like being in on a secret. I for one know I'm much more interested in the projects with public information, but then I'm not able to buy into either so probably don’t count. Someone asked me about the inferno and I know I had heard a little about it but am much more interested in the Platy where I have a lot more info. Nice thing about a free market, the buyers can decide what they want.

zefdin Oct 15, 2007 02:21 PM

Well said Randy.

I dont think I will be buying an Inferno or a Super Stripe anytime soon either, however, I have been following Jared and the Super Stripe and I am much more interested in the one I understand and have worked through in my mind and how I would like to breed it if I had the opportunity. More so than some elusive "hanger 51" morph...

lol....its hanger 18 or area 51

I'm sure those that pay alot in the beginning of these new and secret projects are going to keep it quiet too...They will have paid enough for the animal/s for it to be in their best interests just the same.
