Tips on taming a collared...

platinumtlc Oct 15, 2007 10:54 PM

So I am finally back with my collared. For the past year or so, I've had to move around a lot for school and other reasons. And during that time, the collared has been in the care of my mom. During that time, she has become less accustomed to handling. Now, she gets really aggressive and nervous when I am near her tank. Since she will be with me day in and day out for a long period of time, i really want her to get used to me again without biting. I've been with her 2 days now and she's already bitten my twice. Blood has been drawn but nothing serious lol. Everytime I put my hand in the tank, she gets into a defensive position and has even lunged at me and I SWEAR i could her her mouth snap shut as she tries to bite me. I'm looking for some suggestions on how to get my girl back on my good side. I'm not that worried about being bit, but I do want her to become tame. She's about 2 years old, full grown female, and I'm not sure if she was captive bred or not.

As weird as it may sound, take her out to a place thats safe, not alot to hide under (maybe your bathroom) and sit down and let her run. Let her walk over you and on you and do not try and pick her up just put your hand close to her , see if she will come near.
Do this for a few minutes each day, she will enjoy coming out and soon accept you if you do not grab at her, "let her come to you".

Just give it a try. She should get used to YOU again. And maybe show us her pic, lol

What do you feel about wearing thin gloves when handling them?

Hey I have been bite by the best, BIG KONG got me the day he arrived many years ago now, I tried to pull him out of a sock that Mr. Eddington packed him in and he munched down on my finger and it bled like all get out.

I lived through it to tell the story, hehehehhee LMAO point is I just kept picking him up anyway (no gloves) and soon he became one of my favorite lizard friends in the world He's a big ole gentle giant and has had the run of the reptile room for a LONG time.

Your girl may change with daily handling, just stuff a squiggly super worm or delicious bug in her mouth and pick her up.
Just keep trying to pick her up slowly.
