Slow-growing Sav

monitor_dude Aug 22, 2003 05:57 PM

I bought a hatchling Savana Monitor about 4 months ago. I figure he was probibly about a month old when I bought him. He hasn't really grown that much even though I feed him about twice a week. He eats mostly crickets, bugs I find sometimes (I find a lot of praying mantis' in my neck of the woods), a fuzzy or pinkie mouse once in a while, sometimes a goldfish. He's only grown about a inch or less the last 4 months I've had him. Any ideas, or am I just being paranoid?

You're not being paranoid; you're starving him. Hatchlings need to eat much more frequently than adults. Feed him daily while he's growing. My Sav, when he was young, ate around 30 crickets a day, and the first time I offered him pinkies, he ate six. Don't feed him anymore goldfish. Goldfish are notorious for being loaded with parasites, and Savs aren't fish-eating monitors anyway. It might be a good idea for you to post us the rest of your set-up so you can be sure you're providing the best care for your Sav. (If you've been starving him and feeding him goldfish, chances are you've been misinformed about other aspects of their care requirements, too.)
