Is this an Ultramel?

Mschrank Oct 16, 2007 10:39 AM

I'm still trying to figure out if this is an ultramel. If anyone can give me some insight I'd appreciate it.

I am not an expert by any means but that looks more like a Ghost to me.

I'm not sure exactly what that is, as I am no expect myself... however, it is most definitely NOT a ghost. Ghosts are anery A and hypo... there would be no visible red/orange on the hatchling.

Yep, that's an Ultramel...

Sorry for the 2nd post BUT I saw your post below saying the Female was a snow and the male a hypo. You'r correct in pointing out the eye coloration. A regular Hypo would have black eyes.

The female snow is a combination of Anery & albino ...... and the male was a HYPO (het for AMEL at least).

As you know there are a ton of hypo genes floating around. Many are hard to tell apart. For years, the ULTRA hypo corns were just "weird looking Hypos"....Nowadays, there's a ton of genes floating around in the corn hobby from so many different crosses/combinations/breeding projects.... I would bet my paycheck that the "Male Hypo" is actually a "Male ULTRA Hypo HET. Amel" ..... Thus bred together they would produce Ultramels (since the ultra gene is co-dominent with the amel gene) and a few other morphs.

I work with a few of the hypo genes (including Lavas and Ultramels)... That's my two cents...

Thanks Graham,
This turned out to be a lucky pairing. 9 of the hatchlings look like typical albinos. It that what they are? The other 11 are Ultramel.

If I'm understanding everything correctly in this situation... yes, 9 albino babies (het snow...ie het anery) and 11 ultramel (het anery)... I just really love the ultramel gene... I'm going to breed it into HIGH WHITE reverse okeetees to try and THICKEN up the purple"ish" colored borders of the ultramels... Good luck with everything.
