Which is better, one or the other or both? Also anyone know how often fica trees need to be watered or will the mist and or dripper do the trick?

I'd suggest BOTH rather than one over the other. Most of my chams prefer their dripper, but a few are keen on mist collecting on leaves. Are you monitoring the humidty level? Misting (automatic is easier on your hand and likely to be more consistant) will help keep the humidity up.
Your plant if dripped on directly will likely get over-watered.
