Rattle Snake Vaccine

Has anyone heard of this? It's a annual shot for dogs that they have at most vet offices. Has anyone used this on a person? Does it work? Any negative reactions? or am I just pissing in the wind with this idea?

It's been around for a few years. I've had people swear by it but haven't seen any test data. It's only good for atrox.

I believe I read somewhere awhile back that it is also used for other species of rattlesnakes other than C. atrox.
Not sure though, I thought it was a polyvalent for crotalids.

It might only be approved for atrox, but I think someone (or some dog I suppose) would be hard pressed to produce any kind of resistance/immunity to atrox without having at least some cross reactivity to other closely related taxa...

Just kinda as a side note, atrox venom is very thick and viscous... from the samples I've seen if you put it side by side with copperheads/cottons/some other rattlesnakes etc the atrox venom just seems "thicker".

This is from the website that Gerald kindly provided.

"What types of snakes does this vaccine protect against?
This rattlesnake vaccine was developed to protect against Western Diamondback Rattlesnake venom. It is most effective against this snake's venom.

Venom from many other snakes found throughout the United States is similar to the venom of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. Because of these similarities, this vaccine also provides protection against the venoms of the Western Rattlesnake (including the Prairie, Great Basin, Northern and Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes), Sidewinder, Timber Rattlesnake, Massasauga and the Copperhead. This vaccine provides partial protection against the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake."

Yeah, I tried it on my wife last year. For the first two weeks after the shot she continuously wet the carpet, chewed on the furniture and howled at the moon. It's been over a year ago and she still turns around 3 times before she lays down in the bed.

Needless to say, I give her rabies shot every year, now.

Oh, by the way, quit the stinkin' thinkin'. Ha! Ha!

Have a good one!

Don't waste you're money. Dogs have a natural resiliance to venom. They are not immune by any means, but seem to suffer less than humans too. I know of a daschund that got bit on the nose by an atrox. The kept it on a respirator. In a few days, the dogs was fine.
