recently ive moved my ball python (3yr) up to small rats as he as outgrown mice and next to everytime he ends up squeezing the rat to bits and ends up covered in rat guts/poop i defrost them in hot water, does anyone know what im doing wrong? or if its just a fluke?

I feel bad for you, that is the worse thing to clean up. To me it sound like you are overheating them. I use warm water also to unthaw. Just watch how long you let it sit in there.

If you put them in a ziplock, and let them thaw out to room temp, and then just use hot water for about 10 min to heat them up, then they won't tear apart.
