I have a JCP that is a bit of a jerk. He strikes immediately when I open his cage. If I can get him out, he is fine after that. Any tips on calming him down??

I got my JCP when he was just a year old. I would take him out with a hook and put him on a branch and slowly touch him and he would snap his head around. But after a while I could hold him. Now I reach into his cage anytime and can get him. But I do let him know I am getting in there.

It is very common that young Carpets are skidish. I am sure they think everything is out to eat them. So you just have to deal with being a bit of a chew toy until they get a little older. Most but not all settle down and become very placid snakes just keep handleing it.

My female does the same thing. I think if I feed her outside of her encloser then this wouldn't be an issue.
What I found works wonders is a single leather glove. I don't know what it is, but I can reach in there bare handed and I'm going to get tagged. I reach in the encloser with a leather glove I can get her out without a problem.
Take care
