Hi,

I am new to frogs and was doing some research. Something I
read said that PH levels are critical with ACF. Do you
have to maintain their water as you would fish? I have never
had any luck with fish so I don't want to go there! These
frogs really caught my eye. There are 2 up for adoption at
one of the humane societies near me. I like the fact that
they will eat just about anything and that they are very hardy.
Can someone enlighten me on problems with these guys as far
as habitat and so forth? Any difficulties?

I have much experience with reptiles which in some ways
are similar.

Thanks so much
Linda

Hi,

Welcome! ACF's are pretty hardy, they have been known to tolerate pH from 6.5 to 8.5 and temperatures from 0-30*c. Although they do prefer a pH of around 7 and a temperature of around 24*c. They will eat lots and almost everything but it's important to give them a varied balanced diet of crustaceans such as krill and brineshrimp, tubifex and tetra reptomin pellets. It is also important to change their water at least once a month fully, but if you do a half change every 2 weeks they will be fine. A filter (undergravel or electric, do not leave on all the time) is also useful. They are great creature and very entertaining to watch, plus, they are a great conversation piece. Your family and friend will either love them or hate them. Some people think they're ugly, can you believe it?lol.

Hope this answers some q's,

one more question. The 2 that are up for adoption are 7
years old according to the shelter. Is this possible and if
so what is their life span. I have just began to read up on
them and I guess I have not crossed this info yet.

It sounds as if they need to be kept pretty much like my
aquatic turtles when it comes to PH

Thanks again
Linda

Hi Linda,

Some of these frogs have been reported to live up to 28 years if they are kept properly, but for most the lifespan is around 10 years, and longer if they are kept clean and away from illness, injury and diseases.

I am doing some more research before I decide and in the
meantime I have to convince my husband that I need a frog
It was funny, when I asked him he got this real stupid look
on his face! Ha!
