That is not a leopard gcko at all. It is of the Coleonyx spp.
Definitely a banded gecko of some sort,

I kinda thought it looked odd as it had no banding for such a young leo.
Sheesh, stupid me and stupider petstore.

yup that is a central american banded gecko, at least im pretty sure it is. i breed tuscon bandeds. they are good little geckos, easy, and pretty hardy, but arent very good for holding. this is one of my wild caught ones.

Its pretty spooked right now.Im really very mad.Its a 3hr round trip to go back to the petstore if I want to take it back.I dont normally even go in Petco but went in to check out the birds and saw the leos on sale for 16 bucks and have wanted a normal for awhile now. What the heck am I going to do with a banded gecko? I dont even know how old it is or anything. He killed a cricket last night but didnt eat it or the mealies.Ive got him in a 10gal. with the same cond. as I would have for leos.two hides, one humid, dish of calcium and water.

I guess I could give him to my son he likes the little wild ones.

im surprised you found it at petco. however you should be able to return it to any petco. my first instinct would be to say that its for sure wild caught however i think petco has to sale only captive breed animals but i live in cali so it might be different. anyhow you could sen it to me hehe. i would try not to handle it. even my captive breed baby bandeds are wild and dont like to be held. also maybe try smaller crickets. after a day or so it should chow down.

Every PetCo I've entered (midwest and south) has offered wildcaught herps. And, as with PetsMart, many of the small lizard species are just that, as gecko and agamid imports can be cheaper and quicker to turn a buck on than captive bred redundancy. Most petshops won't want to always offer one kind of gecko (leopards), chameleon (veiled), and agamid (bearded dragon) - consistency on the part of the seller doesn't breed impulsiveness on the part of the buyer (which is the feeling with which the bulk of pet store reptile purchases seem to be made). Enter wildcaught diversity such as Central American banded geckos...

3 hours round trip is like 16 dollars in gas, just keep it.

It would cost more in gas then I paid for him.He is cute, I just wanted to concentrate more on leos.I will probably keep him unless I can find someone who wants to trade locally.

I have two leos and they are huge and heavy compared to him.I have been informed he is an adult male and he is just about 3inches long.I havent really had the chance to handle him much as he is scared and I dont want to stress him right now.But he does look very much like a leo, same litte toes and general body appearance except thinner.
Im getting attached already, he's just so tiny.

Curiously, in Coleonyx species (all the banded gecko species), males are smaller than females - the reverse of what you find in leopard geckos.
