New Crestie

fuzzbuzz Oct 17, 2007 04:00 PM

I'm totally new to keeping lizards and got a cute lil crested gecko the other week.

Thing is he doesnt come out of hiding at all when theres any light in the room, and if i switch on the light and hes out and about he just sits perfectly still. Also he doesnt seem interested in crickets when i put them in the tank but they seem to have dissapeared the next day. Is he just shy and will get more used to the light? He's plently active when I handle him and seems healthy enough.

I was just wondering if they are all different personality wise, as my friends cresties are eager to be fed and dart at the crickets straight away.

Did you do any research before you bought the animal?

They're nocturnal. I'd freeze if some giant picked me up under a light, too.

Of course I did research first, I dont shine a big lamp in his viv for gods sake. *rolls eyes*

I mean that when i put on a little light across the room he just freezes up where as it doesnt bother my leopard gecko at all. I just wondered if cresties are more fussy with light or whether he'll get more relaxed when ive had him longer.

You have to understand that some people DO come here and do exactly what you described in your message. You didn't say anything about reading up first or what kind of light you are using. We get all kinds here and it is often very frustrating to help people with limited information. I would have liked to have seen what kind of light and what kind of enclosure and if you were feeding anything in addition to crickets as well as the expected age of the crested.

My guess is he might just not be used to this new, big, shiny world that looks nothing like where he used to live. Also he could be startled by the sudden light, your other gecko is probably used to you doing this month after month. Make sure you are offering Crested Gecko Diet or one of the other MRP in addition to crickets if s/he is a young one, that is how I find they grow the best.

Cresteds have VERY different personalities, mine probably has ADD in fact, but I will say after a year or a year and a half she settled down a little bit. My brother in law's gecko is so out of it I think it hit his head too many times... oh course, that is the gecko I THOUGHT I was getting when I got little miss ADD. But I love her... when I can catch her.

Good luck.

I wasn't attacking you man, just asking a question and making a comment.

My Squirt is fine when the lights go on, i've had him for about 9 months. However, the girl I have, a Petco rescue, however, will hardly let me look at her. I only know she's alive by the rustling of leaves as she eats her crickets.

Like Sleepy said, they each have their own personality. Give it some time to settle down, and give us an update.
