Shipping to Puerto Rico? Questions...

JP Oct 17, 2007 05:49 PM

I've got a guy in Puerto Rico who seems interested in some snakes. I've never shipped out of the US. SO:

1) Is it even legal to own BPs in PR? I know most island territories are extremely careful about what type of non-native species they allow in, if any.

2) Would any type of customs paperwork, CITES paperwork, or any other paperwork be required?

3) Does FedEx service PR, and would they be able to do priority overnight there? Would it be super-doooper expensive?

Any other general comments? For a small time guy like me, this sounds like it may be more hassle than its worth...Thoughts?

HI, I lived in PR and was Vice President of the Local Herp Society. It was called El Serpentario.

1. Yes it's legal to own BP!!

2. The only documents you will need to get is a Health Certificate and include a copy of the invoice along with the Health Certificate in the box.

3. Fed Ex does not ship to PR!! You will have to use Delta Dash.

BP are the only snake that the Natural Resources will allow to be shipped in to PR.

I just helped a friend of mine get 20 BP from a Vendor that is used to ship to PR and they know the animals that are legal their. It's not a hassle unless you do not have an account with Delta Dash and if you live far from an Airport.

I hope this helps!!!! If you need any more info just email me.

Any upcoming shows or good ball python stores in San Juan? I go down on business fairly regularly, twice in the next month. Probably no time to check anything out but just in case.

In the 7 years I lived there we never had a show to sell animals. But we did set up a booth when they had animal awareness week. We tried to educate the people on the local Fauna. We would have several snakes, but the one that drew the most attention was an Albino Burmese. The people on the island just do not understand and only want the low cost Ball Python. You will only find the normal BP for sale since it's the only one allowed to be sold.

PR only has 3 snakes, the Racer, a black snake that moves really fast, a blind snake and the Puerto Rican Boa. The boa is protected. Now any other snake found has been brought in to the island thru the years. I do not remember ever seeing a snake when I was a kid and growing up in PR.

Sorry for the long post. If you have any other questions just email me at snakeman56@gmail.com

Just make sure he doesn't want to pay you with a "certified check" and is willing to send you more, just reimburse the difference so he can finance his "missionary trip" he is doing in Puerto Rico etc.........SCAM............

Why do you think this is a SCAM?????

We all get from time to time. Someone inquires about an animal, but clearly has no idead what they are talking about. They tell you they're sending a certified check in excess of what you are asking, and ask for yoiu to send the change. Only later do you find out the check was fake, and you then owe your bank the full amount. Its commonly called the "Nigerian Scam", and has been featured on dateline NBC, 20/20, etc...
