THE STAR (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia) 10 October 07 Amateur fishermen land a crocodile (Meera Vijayan)
Johor Baru: A couple of amateur fishermen hooked a 3.7m crocodile while fishing by the shores of the Tebrau Straits near here.
The crocodile was caught at a spot popular with amateur fishermen, where the sea meets the city near an abandoned shopping mall.
Unable to haul the reptile up by themselves, the fishermen called the Fire and Rescue Department for assistance on Tuesday at around 8pm.
Leading the team of seven firemen was Johor Baru Fire and Rescue Department commanding officer C. Kesavan who was admittedly shocked at seeing the large reptile.
"I have never seen anything like this before. We don’t usually have crocodiles around here.
"I thought that the men had mistaken a giant Komodo dragon for a crocodile," he said.
Kesavan said that it took the firemen about 20 minutes to drag the reptile up from the water.
The captive crocodile was then given to a crocodile farm.
