Columbia, SC (WIS): The Riverbanks Zoo is home for four new endangered turtles.
At the end of August the critically endangered "Pan's Box Turtles" were hatched at the zoo.
This is the zoo's second successful breeding of the rare turtle, which is nearly extinct in the wild. It has been used in the Chinese traditional medicine trade.
Riverbanks is working with five other zoos to establish a self-sustaining population of the Pan's Box Turtle.
The zoo is now home to 10 of the turtles and plans to continue its breeding program.
