New to Monitors

dlaxplayer4691 Oct 17, 2007 09:14 PM

Hi, ive been wanting to get a monitor for such a long time. I took care of my friends 4 foot blackthroat for a couple of months and loved it. I was curious to what everyone had to reccomend on my first monitor. I have a gold tegu, burm, and 2 beardies that im soon getting rid of. I was so in love with niles until i found out how much handling they need. I'm pretty set on a argus as of now. What do you guys think?? (No Savannhas)

Why are you getting rid of everything? Are you bored with them? Are you running out of room?

Sounds very irresponsible to me, to pursue another creature in your case.

An argus or nile is the stupidest choice you could make.

Be responsible and use your head- get an ackie, be patient.

Tegus are not the same as monitors; so dont expect that makes you ready.

Get an ackie (or better yet, a pair) and start there.

Argus get big; same with Niles... hell, same with MOST monitors. They get big enough that having an enclosure for them in your home can be difficult (if not impossible in some places).

Start with something that ISNT going to grow to 6 ft in length; then work your way up.

Post more pics of ur savy. He's so tiny, and he's very light in color. Mine is always dirty brown, from all the dirt. How long and how old is he?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Anyway I don't know how old he is but I got him at a Petland and he was like 7-8 inches now he’s like 20 inches here are some more pics with 18inch tongs.

Hello,

I think you will quickly tire with monitors in general if you keep them properly. Beardies and burms require a fraction of the setup work and provide the same basic "action". I am really surprised that the tegu did not provide enough excitement to maintain your attention- are you providing for these animals well? I ask this because if kept right, your monitor will provide you with tons of work and hide from you most of it's life, really. You have to be a true fan of these animals(big monitors) to keep them well and still continue to keep them. I lost my roof to a tornado recently, had to move quickly and set up everything again- I am still full of sore muscles and blisters not from moving furniture but from shoveling dirt and dragging troughs(thanks again to all friends and fam that helped). Also, Niles require no handling like other monitors... Best to you- Mike
