New to chuckawalla hatchlings

Repit Oct 18, 2007 05:01 AM

New to this forum, but not to chuckawalla's. I have wild caught adults for 12 years and one female caught 6 years ago. I had gave up on ever seeing hatchlings, yesterday I couldn't belive my eyes. was feeding the adults this guy must have been 8 to 10 inches from my hand beautifull. I would love help with information about hatchling chuckawalla'a, they are not eating after one day, I just don't want to blow it after so many years. I took them out of the adults outside cage. Put them in a smaller 4'wide X 7'long X 4' high cage. PLEASE HELP with any care information about what is easiest for them to eat. Thank you even if you read this much but still can't help. thank you

Hatchlings must eat poo to get their digestive system jump started. Just put fresh poo in there with the other veggies and they will eat what they want. Some even munch poo after many months but as long as the little guys have some for a week or two they should do fine.

Good job! Isn't it a thrill the first time you see a hatchling?! I had some this past summer too, for the first time ever. It was really fun to have them, and still is. Wait til you first notice a tiny chuck doing push-ups to show everyone how cool he is! Very funny!

You've already had several excellent suggestions about letting your babies eat adult chuck poo - these guys are hindgut fermenters. My understanding is that adult poo allows the babies to inoculate themselves with the microbes necessary for their brand of digestion.

My young'uns crunched away on dried poo for a week or so as they ignored green food. I was told by various forum writers not to expect much salad consumption for up to a month. That was right on. FINALLY, the babies started eating greens enthusiastically.

One very helpful tip I was given was to spray water on the walls of the cage and maybe on the top of a cave so the babies could lap it up. This was a big hit with all 8 babies. They spent a lot of time drinking, so you might want to get a spray bottle and mist parts of the enclosure several times a day.

Good luck with your hatchlings!
