Injured Hognose...Eastern red phase??

ToddMac Aug 22, 2003 08:15 PM

My dad was using the weedeater today and ran across a small snake. He called me and outside (I own a Ball Python and a Black Ratsnake) and said he thought it was a cottonmouth. I was pretty sure it was a Hognose and picked it up, but the color had me confused....I finally found a pic of a Red Phase Eastern Hognose and determined that's what I had.

As for the injury, the skin isn't broken, but there's a lump towards the tail. I'm guessing this is where the snake was hit, although it could have already been there.....Is this likely caused by spine damage? The snake isn't moving alot, but I'm not sure if this is from injury or just plain shock. I'm keeping it in a spare tank until I see if it's gonna be ok. There are tons of kingsnakes around my house and I don't want to turn this little 10 incher loose and let it become an easy meal, if it's indeed injured.

By the way, I'm from Mississippi....Are these "red pahses" rare? I've never heard of one in my area.
