Is Sycamore OK to Use for Corn Snakes?

bamboo42 Oct 18, 2007 11:34 AM

I have this question posted on Corn Snakes: Housing & Enclosures but now see that it might not get answered for a while. I hope nobody minds that I repeat my question here, on the main corn snake forum.

My neighbor just cut down a humongous sycamore tree and has offered me some wood. I'd like to use it in my corn snake's cage (a 55-gallon aquarium), but don't know anything about sycamore. Is it ok to use for furniture, such as a climbing branch, hollow log for a hide, etc.?

My pet corn snake is 15yo; we've had him since he was a hatchling. I don't want to do anything that might shorten his life. Obviously we'd have to dry the wood out before using it, but what I'm worried about is whether there's oils or anything else in sycamore that might be an issue.

Thanks for reading, and any replies. I appreciate it!

I've not heard of syamore procucing any toxins. It's a hardwood and as far as I know, they get shredded and put into bags of mulch labeled things like " Texas local hardwood mulch".
I'd say no problem at all.

I never would have thought to use sycamore to smoke fish, I may have to try it sometime, sounds interesting.

For the question at hand, if it is dried, there should be no problems.

Thanks for the responses; I appreciate y'all taking the time to comment.

Guess I'll go visit my neighbor and pick out the few pieces of sycamore I'd like to have!

Take care!
