chicks

boxienuts Oct 18, 2007 05:27 PM

does anyone feed chicks to their BP they seem to be cheaper to buy than mice or rats? If so what are the plus and minus to feeding chicks versus rodents. I was just thinking that maybe it would be OK to alternate chicks and rats if the BP would eat them, or would that be a bad idea?
Thanks for any advice or input.
Jeff

not all that good ,,but yes they might eat them.

less vitamins and less calcium.......makes the feces smell badly....but balls hold their food longer than colubrids ,so maybe the smell will be less than awful......and less runny...

......chicks are alot of water and not 100% good meaty food..

.....used to be able to get chicks free and still didn't use them that much.......then they went up to 2 cents.now I am not sure,,alot of companies won't deal with the public anymore..

So nobody out there feeds BP's chicks? Is reason mainly the messy feces?

Chicks have less meat on them than rats -- therefore less protein. They also have hollow bones -- which means much less calcium. This can become a problem for snakes, especially for breeding females that require high amounts of calcium to properly develop their eggs. Not to mention that a ball python can easily get stuck on eating chicks and then you'd have a hard time ever selling it because 99% of people feed only rodents to their collection.
