I think they are available more seasonably than some other species. Melleri can be quite touchy as almost all are WC adults. They are not as expensive for wholesalers to get and often get poor care because of it. They need VERY large cages (try a minimum of 8'x8'x8') or to be free ranged. They are big chams so need lots of larger feeders too. The usual crix just won't be nearly enough. Temperment varies a lot. Some are quite nice, others are really pissy and aggressive. They have more complicated social behaviors too. The Melleri Discovery site is the best place to get information about them. Caring for melleri will really change your life, believe me! I've kept 3 over the years. Really enjoyed them, but you have to dedicate a lot of space, time, attention, and $$ to keep them healthy. A few are being captive bred, but the breeders will be quite picky about who they sell babies to.

I highly recommend against any WC Melleri. I have over 10 years experience with CB mellers in the past and can say that even CB melleri can be a challenge. I have never purchased a WC specimen but have known many people throughout the years who did and have never known any of these to survive long in captivity. Why support WC when there are CB babies available? The melleridiscovery site is the best source of info on this species.

Good luck and best regards.

Yes WC melleri can be very difficult just like any other species. There are exceptions, but it takes a lot of attention and experience to catch and treat problems, and for many health problems we don't have much to offer. I had a wc melleri who was healthy for years. She was gentle, almost social, really tough, and a joy. But she also had a bedroom all to herself, a variety of large feeders, pretty specialized vet care and careful nutrition which took a lot of time and $ too.
