Drinking water, kind of odd?

EddieF Oct 18, 2007 07:33 PM

Okay I know you're all tired of hearing about my snake. But I thought this was interesting, odd actually. She just ate a big meal, and usually she's very thirsty right after she eats. But mostly she drinks like a horse, points her nose down into the water and just sucks water in.

Well this evening, and she did it long enough for me to go get the camera, put the battery in set it to movie and take this, she drank like, well, like I do at a football game. You may or may not be able to tell in the video, but her bottom jaw is underwater and she's just gulping away.

First time I've seen her drink like this, is this odd? I'm giving two possible links to the same video, in case one doesn't work for you.

I wouldn't worry about that at all, as it is common for snakes to take long drinks and I have seen mine do the exact same thing yours did.

I wasn't really worried, just thought it was interesting and wondering if that was an uncommon snake drinking style. It's funny how predictable she is at times though, she wants to drink right after she eats, but while she's eating in the tupperware, I'm cleaning her water dish and stuff. So there's a couple minutes when she's looking around after a meal for her water dish, then the minute I put it back she's gulping it down.

It is really cool. For a couple months after we got her I could never catch her drinking, she only did it at night.

Somewhere I got a video of my carolina box turtle drinking just like that, I just never get tired of seeing animals eat or drink.
Reminds me of seeing a cow drink after she gives birth, or on a hot summer day just out of the milking parlor.
It reminds me of what a friend of mine asked me. "Why are your snakes always doing cool stuff, and my snake just sits there?
I answered, because I have more than one snake. If you have a lot of snakes, you'll always find one of them doing something cool.
I kinda suspect I'm missing the really cool stuff because there's so much stuff always going on, but them's the breaks......

That has got to be the coolest video I have seen in a long while.

Thanks!! By the time I got the camera and came back, I was really surprised she was still doing it.

Very cool Video thanks for posting it!!
Its not very often I get to see my snakes drink but my Red Tail Boa by far drinks the longest of course he is also my largest snake as well but he can drink for a good 30 seconds to a minute. About once every other meal I dip the rodent or spray the rodent with clean water just to make sure the snakes are hydrated, mainly do this with neonates but sometimes with my adults as well especially after a shed.
