How Do YOU do IT?

Sunshine Oct 18, 2007 08:26 PM

...are you a popper, prober, or a palpator? I am still uncomfortable sexing snakes with prdictable results. I'd be better if I could do some follow-up throughout the fist 3 years. At least, that's my excuse. The real reason is lack of practice, I just don't try. I have popped cornsnakes and probed a few of my BRB's, but haven't done any palpating for sexing.

What method(s) do you prefer and how long did it take to become 98% proficient in it?

Thanks,
Linda

depends on the species dumerils boas just look for spurs if it has em male if not female baby balls corns and carpets pop im just learning the whole feel for BB's but i got a good idea of it and adults and young adults probe thats jsut me tho popping with corns it took me first clutch to be 100% sure they are very easy to pop carpets i still dont label 100% but i will label em close lol probing pends on species some are tricky like a female coastal carpet that goes in 7 yeah that was fun lol

personal question?

I'm a popper, never tried probing, always been a bit afraid of it. I learned popping from a friend and seems real easy on baby BRB's. Mike showed me the palpate method but I just couldn't feel them lil suckers so, back to popping it is.

i probe everything with good results.

with carpet pythons it is kinda a draw, as there are alot of animals that are tweens (probing between male and female).

I probe the little ones. After they are 30 to 36 inches long I can palpate them. With the little ones my fingertips are just not sensitive enough. I do not think anyone can sex snakes with 100% accuracy. I have gotten missexed snakes from some of the biggest names in the business. When I am probing baby Rainbow Boas if it probes deeply indicating male I am very very confident that it is male and do not reprobe. It it probes shallow indicating female I probe the other side to increase accuracy. I reprobe all the females a few days later to further increase accuracy. During reprobing on the ones that initially probed shallow I find a couple percent of them that are actually male.

I'll be putting these actions into practice.
