Tiger Rat Video

BillyBoy Oct 19, 2007 07:27 AM

Shot a little video of two of my juvie Spilotes last night. I got footage of my ceremonial hit from my little female - she does it pretty much without fail every time I go to take her out. That's usually it though, and she calms down once she's out.

My two big adults are both currently in shed, but after they shed, I am going to get some footage of them, especially feeding time to show just how fast these monsters eat!

Enjoy!

I think its nice that your posting video - I like to see that. I wish though, that people who posted video would do 2 things. One is edit their video. Your 5 minutes of video should have been edited down to about 30 seconds. And second, leave the music out of it. Although the music may appeal to you, its just annoying for most viewers and it adds nothing to your message.
And I guess, one more thing - leave the titles out of it too. For the most part they are annoying and also, they are annoying

Just my pet peeves. I used to teach video editing (etc) and I had to remind people over and over - your not trying to amuse yourself, your trying to communicate effectively.

Sorry for nit-picking!

Hi Joe. I appreciate the comments and would like to respond, just so you see my point of view and mindset.

1. I did edit it, although I obviously did it quickly. I probably could have taken it down a bit more, but I really wanted to show both animals in detail and have their "personalities" (inquisitive, bold, confident, etc.) shine through a bit. I don't think I could show that effectively in a 30 second spot (15 seconds per animal? no way!).

2. While the music may annoy some people, from my own perspective and experience, I find that videos may be a bit boring without it. I think it can set the tone for the message the video is sending, as well as speak to the intended demographic. Of course, it could also backfire and turn someone off immediately.

3. I believe that unless the video content is completely obvious to the general public, a title is warranted. In this case, I wanted people to know what they were looking at. On youtube, many, many people, both in the hobby and not, will see this video (I hope) and I want people to know that these are Spilotes pullatus, also known as Tiger Rat Snakes. Again, personally, I think some typographical commentary (as opposed to my droning, annoying voice) adds a little fun and/or information for the viewer.

Bottom line is, thanks for watching my video and taking the time to comment. I will definitely store your comments away for my next video making endeavors.

I thought the video was GREAT! I've only seen S.pullatus in pictures before, and while I thought they were very attractive snakes, the pictures don't do 'em justice. As you said their confident, inquisitive nature is apparent in the video, and I enjoyed all five and a half minutes of it, and the music was perfect. Thanks for adding ANOTHER snake to my wish list!

I went to the pawn shop and asked for Spilotes and but the owner gave me a blank stare. I showed him the scars on my hand and he was even more confused! Guess I will have to stick with importers.

Nice vids though they are wicked cool snakes.
Its rad to see the growth rate I remember seeing those snakes last year. I can't wait till my becomes a substantial snake.

Thanks Nate. One of the cool things about these guys is that they grow like retics or burms! When I got the two Surinams about a year ago, they were right around 20" and now they are already up to or over 5'. The little female in the beginning of the video is already over 4 feet - I measured her just the other day at about 51". When I got her last winter I think she was around 15". Keep in mind that is with one feeding every 7-10 days. I have been paranoid of creating fat tigers, so have been keeping the meals fairly small and spread out. Just for reference, here are the same two animals when I got them less than a year ago.

Those are the pics I was talking about! Thats insane the growth rate. I'm feeding on a 5 dayish schedule or after two poo's as I don't want mine to get fat either. I think these guys could eat every other day at the rate they digest thier food, but why push it.

didn't have me speakers on to hear the music lol!
great song by the way. When I worked at snowbird utah we changed the song to down there at the pond lot (employee parking) where I happened to get chased by a large mamma moose, that was more than scary. The black bears don't phase me like the moose do.
