Do Tortoises need company?

Redoaksblues Oct 19, 2007 07:31 AM

I have a baby cherry head red food (doing very well) but I was wondering if it would be possible to add another baby tortoise into the mix...If so....does it have to be the same kind? If not....what other tortoises would be compatible with a Cherry Head?

Any redfoot woud be acceptable if you are not worried about crossbreed which is not really acceptable to most folk.

If you do have a cherryhead there could be a problem with size difference later on.

A yellowfoot would also work but again there is the issue of size difference.

You best bet is to try and get another from the same breeder or stock as your baby came from. That would present the least amount of potential problems.

I keep a Mt. Tort in with my redfoots without problems. Same requiements for temp, food, and humidity. This is not the "standard acceptable practice" but it does work. Obviously as they grow they may need to be seperated but has not been a problem for 3 years. Tom

Tortoises don't NEED company. If you have limited space another tortoise will cause stress due to competing for food, hide spots and basking locations. If you have plenty of room, another redfoot would be best. I'm sure there are some other torts that will work with them, but make sure they live in a similar habitat and have a similary dietary needs.
