male or female....?

krkaye Oct 19, 2007 08:00 AM

I have a mali that I thought was a female until last night when a breeder viewed my pics and told me she was a he. She's only 8.5 inches and we got her in March 2006 as a 4 inch youngster from a local pet store. I have some pictures here so that i can have more opinions as I'm trying to find her/him a proper mate and I don't want two males! Help!! Also....how long does it take these guys to reach their full adult size??

I'm no expert, and kind of a beginner in the Uromastyx area.. But it looks like a male to me. It has a good number of distinct femoral pores.

Unfortunately femoral pores aren't always a reliable sexing tool for uros. I wouldn't hazard a guess myself - not enough experience in sexing. Maybe one of the breeders who sometimes visit the forum could help you.

I think he is male-hard to see all of the pores from pic and they show up more in spring(usually)-and you can't always tell from pores except in exceptional cases-but if it was 4 inches in a pet store 1.5 years ago and is yellow already at 8.5"- I would think he is male. They sell boxes of cigars half blue and half pink if you want to pass some out-hold on to the pink just in case I am wrong.

That's funny....I think the blue cigar is probably a keeper. Its what I keep hearing from others too. Someone sent me a picture of their uro like mine when he was about the size of mine and the coloring is very very alike. This person's uro is now full grown and black/yellow---a male. I have a uro book I bought back when I bought him and it shows a pic of the difference between the male's and female's tail area and mine looks like the male photo (although, it was an Egyptian Uro in the pic). Both the pores and the lump before and after the vent. The female's was a little less of a distinct set of lumps too. Anyway, I've heard, despite my picture book, that its hard to tell the differnce at times so I've been trying to get other's opinions before I buy a mate....I'd hate to have two males and have them fight. Thanks for your help.
