Panacur

jag Aug 22, 2003 08:57 PM

We just took winky to the vet today and upon a fecal examination found out that he has pinworms. Is this a fairly common problem and how often should Panacur be given to help remedy said parasites? thanks

Pinworms are one of the most common parasites in reptiles. In fact, it is more common to find herps with pinworms than without. They aren't deadly, but if the infestation gets out of hand they can make your gecko feel sick and not hungry. Did your vet give you an idea of how concetrated the worms are? I have had mild cases clear themselves up without medication in my geckos and in my tortoises. As long as you clean out their poop everyday, they won't run the risk of ingesting it. That's how the pinworms get out of hand. If you'd rather treat the worms, then ask your vet to recommend or prescribe something. Then you'll know you're getting the right stuff and the right dosage.

Get your vet to prescribe panacur, he will show you hpow to administer and tell you the time frame between dosages per round. Ask if he will gicvve you some extra to keep in your fridge, and you can administer every six months if u want, or if your gex show symptoms.

Pinworms are very common but IMO they should always be treated, low-level nematode infestations can cause a general failure to thrive and failure to get fat, even if they don't cause severe illness.

dose depends on size give first dose and then wait 2 weeks to give second.
