Where to learn kingsnake genetics?

merlin7676 Oct 20, 2007 10:28 AM

So I'm interested in possibly breeding down the road (3-4 years) but I am facinated by genetics. Is there some books that go into details as far as albino, hypos, ect..not just basic stuff?
Maybe a book that deals with kingsnake genetics in particuluar. So i can find out if I breed kingsnake A with kingsnake B, what would I get?

thanks,
Shawn

you would gain a lot by getting a book on genetics and learning the basics. kingsnake genetics pretty much follow the rules. the advantage of knowing the basics of genetics is that you will be ahead of many many others. This will help you tell legit projects from phony projects when you talk to breeders and ask questions about what they are selling.

there are a couple of corn snake books that talk about genetics, those would be a good primer without spending tons of dough.

I am familiar with genetics on the whole. In fact I'm a microbiologist. I just want to learn about snake genetics.
For example a reverse stripped cal king...what goes into that? How you get the reverse and the stripped? That sort of thing.
Do you breeders just know from breeding? Or did you learn from some book/website/ect?

thanks,
shawn
