added my first frilled to a large collection. . . .

Went to get ants for my desert horned lizards tonight and my pet store (privately owned....not petco/petsmart hell) had a baby(?) juvenile(?) frilled. He’s 14 inches total, with 10 of that being tail. . . .and my what delicate looking tails they do have. My 4 Ig’s are all adults, as are my 2 bearded dragons and 1 veiled chameleon. It’s been SOOO long since they were little (especially the Ig’s) I hardly remember how to deal w/such a delicate little tail. . . .but what a cutie. . . .and the guy made me a deal I couldn’t refuse . . . I think. Well, I didn’t anyway. $149 for frillie, then sold me the 25$ ants for only 10$. . .and gave me a couple bucks worth (each) of crickets (@5$/100) & superworms (20 worms).

The little guy (he frilled at bit in the store and it was pretty good size) looks pretty good and is very alert but he did appear a big dehydrated. . .so when I got home, I dripped a bit of water onto his snout and wiggled my fingernail between his lips to make sure he knew what I was offering. He drank & drank and is looking better already. I’m thinking he’ll look even better in the morning, once that water makes it’s way into his tissues & such.

He fell asleep in my hand while I was reading the newbie posts and is now sprawled out sleeping in the corner of his cage (tank). Didn’t stay on the big driftwood like I thought he would. . . hmmmm. Anyway. . . .

Haven’t thought of a name yet. If you’re so inclined, respond and let me know what fun & interesting names you’ve chosen and why.

. . . and since I’ve been reviewing the other newbie posts, won’t ask any questions but would welcome any tips and or basics you feel like sharing.

Thanks for taking the time to read my longwinded post. I’m just so excited I had to share w/others who understand. This reptile thing is an addiction you know. Kingsnake Forums are our support groups.

Happy frills to all and to all a good night,
Rebecca (and the zoo)

Congratulations! You got a fair deal there. Good price. And sounds like your dragon is less than a year old but not quite a baby. They are very aware of new cages and take a wile to get acclimated. He'll start sleeping on the driftwood soon. Just care for them as you do your beardies and he'll be fine.

As for names, I named mine Jar Jar from the character in Star Wars. I think the similarity is obvious. Their personalities resemble puppies though so any famous puppy might be good? I dunno. Good luck with your new frillie and we'd love to see a pic!

Thanks for the reply. I did some more suring this morning and found out my little guy in a New Guinea (not Aussie) frill. Thought I'd check out names of New Guinea cities/districts/etc. . . , to see if I could find a cool names that 'fits'. However. . .I'm having a hard time finding info about what part of New Guinea the are limited to Maybe they're not limited. I don't know. Does anyone know from which area(s) of New Guinea they originate? (mine is CB of course, but you know what I mean.)

It was easy to find that info about the Aussie frills. Northern to North Eastern Aus.

Thanks,
Rebecca

I too just got frilled dragon, she's about the same size - I was told 8 months was how old she was. I named her Lilith - she just seemed to look like a Lilith - I'm way stoked about taking care of her, she's my first herp so I'm still learning, but she's really chilled out, in fact she frilled for the first time the other day and I've had her for a week.

Good luck with him/her!

You're braver than I am. I always thought these guys were real delicate, so would have never tried it before haveing done real well w/my Cham for 3yrs now (which I also thought were delicate). I've seen adults though, at the same pet store I bought this guy from. It was truely a magical looking creature. Like something wizard's 'familiar' or something.

Yesterday he ate & drank well but threw up a couple of crickets. Honestly, I think I overfeed him a bit (my bad). Today he hasn't eaten but, has drunk plenty of water, basked at different levels on the driftwood and and soaked for awhile too (Not as long as yesterday though. I think he was kinda dehydrated and his skin a bit chewed up too, when I first got him). He's looking good but, man(!) his skin seems so thin & papery compared to the Ig's, Bearded D's or even the Cham. Is it really different, or is it my imagination?

What's your set up like? I've already got large cages outside (I live in Dallas, TX, so some of the 'zards are outside most of the year.) I've have to get another big one for inside but right while he's still so small he'll be in a tall 55 gal aquarium (30"wide x 23"tall x 12"deep), with a 'W' shaped piece of driftwood that reaches about 3/4 of the way across and 3/4 of the way to the top on one side. Under the tall side of driftwood, I've put a 10"round x 2"deep drinking/soaking saucer. . .and the heat lamp above, so he can climb up/down to thermoregulate to his hearts content). On the other side I put a small (15" verigated schefflera that, with the pot, almost touches the top of the tank. I've got a small cup for greens and a small cup for insects on the tank bottom between.

Once again I've rambled on & on . . . so better get out of here now. Keep you're eyes open, I'll be posting some pics next weekend and. . . .maybe by then will have come up w/a name for the little guy.

Take care all,
Rebecca (and the zoo)

My setup is still a work in progress (of course) I plan to keep everything indoors, plus I live in an apartment complex in Florida, so outside is not an option, plus there is constant spraying for insects so I'm concerned about that having adverse affects. Right now there isn't much in the tank other than a large piece of wood, the florscent bulb and heating lamp, water dish, etc. I'll try get some pics taken before too much longer.
