Regurgitation/Dehydration

jscrick Oct 20, 2007 06:02 PM

I have heard many accounts of boas regurging and then rolling over and dying. I've had this happen to me 2 times. Both times young males. I always thought it was a case of dehydration that killed them. Had I offered them water immediately, I felt like they wouldn't have died.
I can't speak for the other's experiences.

? Did you have a water dish available to your snakes at all times?

How large of prey did you give your snakes? Prey shouldn't be much bigger around than the largest part of the snake.

Also - did you feed frozen/thawed? If so, how long did you thaw the prey? If the food was still frozen on the inside, that might be an issue.

Did both boas come from the same place? How long after you got them did they die?

Boas shouldn't regurge and then immediately die for "no reason". Regurging is bad, but does happen from time to time, but one regurge doesn't necessarily cause death, and since it happened to you twice in a row, something about the way your setup or feeding routine might be very wrong.

Whoops. Didn't see all the discussion about rodent toxicity before I posted.

In any case, take a good look at ANYTHING that was in common with both boas. The temperatures, access to water, where the boas came from, where the food came from. That's an awful high mortality rate following the same set of circumstances with two different snakes.

It happened years ago. Two completely unrelated circumstances. Just something for the "regurge then rollover and die" crowd to consider. It was a matter of lackidasical sloppy husbandry, as well as ignorance on my part.
