Rack size for adults...newbie?

jime Oct 21, 2007 08:25 PM

I'm new to this forum. Have bred colubrids in the past. Doing all the reading I can about BP and genetics. Planning to get into a couple of morphs (not sure which ones yet)...Setting up my BP area in my home. Thinking about a rack from Vision (tubs are 35" x 21" and 5.3" deep). Is this tub size okay for adult BP. My concern is the depth. Are vision racks decent? Any reason why I should look at a different rack for adults? Thanks for any help. Looking forward to learning lots here!

I have never used vision racks, so can't comment on them. I use 32qt sweaterbox racks for my adult males, and females up to around 1000 - 1200grams. I then switch my females over to CB70 racks which are 17 3/4"W x 33 1/2"L x 6"H. The CB70 racks comfortably house adult females. Hope this helps.

A tub that size is just fine. These animals live in small, dark, cramped rodent burrows in the wild -- they feel secure in small spaces. They don't need a lot of height, just a decent amount of floor space to move around and properly thermoregulate. I keep my animals in Animal Plastics racks using Sterilite 1960 tubs (34 x 16 x 6). They do well in them, although my biggest females that are 3000g seem a bit big for this size, so I bought an Iris 900 rack with tubs that measure 36" x 18-1/4 x 6-1/4 -- not a huge difference but the extra inches seem to help. I suppose it would be like a few extra square feet all around a room for us.

I really love them, I honestly would never go with any other brand/style. I prefer using the heat cable over the Flexwatt that all other rack builders use -- I've seen threads in the past about fires being started in racks that have Flexwatt, but never heard one from an AP rack with heat cable. No weird electrical connections to figure out. I also like that they are completely enclosed except for the front -- gives the snakes the darkness and security they like. I've seen other racks in use by other people, and they're just not my preference. To open or flimsy or...ugly. Plus AP has great customer servce, they respond to e-mails within 24 hours, triple-check the order with you to make sure they have it right, and they ship 100% before or exactly on the date they tell you to expect it. They're great.

Gee, can you tell I like them? LOL!
