FT ASF Rats?

jmartin104 Oct 22, 2007 12:22 PM

I have a few het Pieds that have been problem feeders from day one. I'd like to see a Pied from them before they turn 50. I'd rather not feed live. Has anyone successfully used a FT ASF (African Soft-furred rat) on a previously live feeding problem feeder?

I have had some luck with F/T ASF's but not much....I have had a better response with fresh killed ASF's. Just grab a tail and wack it over a counter top or similar surface and then immedialtelly introduce the food item with tongs.....I still have a few that only want live but, I have just given in to them because I want them to breed this year. hope this helps!

I have not used FT ASF, but have used live ones with luck. What line of pied are you het pied? Thanks.

Why not just feed live? You may have better luck with your animals eating. I feed ALL my snakes live and have never had a "problem feeder"

I have had snakes go off feed....but never had a problem with a snake that wont eat. Just a thought.

I have a Het Pied from Pete Kahl that was problem feeder for months. On one week on, off two weeks... extremely spuradic.

Than one day, I put a divider in his tub temporarily (or at least what I thought would be) to temporarily house another snake.

He hasn't missed a meal since.

I guess the larger environment freaks him out.

Just a thought.

Hey Chelsea,

Good advice! It has worked for us numerous times.

I bought a trio of them a few months back and now have more than i can handle. 4 females gave me 46 babies, that are now weaned, to deal with. I either need to sell a pile of them or buy more bins. They are good fast breeders.

I have an 04 male het pied that ate every few months or more UNTIL i got ASF. In the few months that i have had the ASF he eats weekly, and has only missed once. I am convinced that hey are "magic" feeders and are like CRACK to balls. "Crack rats" is what we call them around here. I also use live ASF rats to sentlive weaned normal rats and it seems to work as well
