Anyone using HARLAN or CAREFRESH

tcdrover Oct 23, 2007 09:01 AM

I'm trying new bedding materials, I'm tired of dealing with all
of that dust that comes with aspen. It appears to have an effect
on my boas.

What are your opinions on these two?

Is the stuff that HARLAN sells the same same as Carefresh?

Is it cheaper, since it is probably sold in bulk?
Anyone recommend that stuff?
I bought the darker Carefresh material, it looks good, kind of
natural looking. The white stuff seemed too sterile looking for
me...

I have been using carefresh for my boas for the last year and i like it a lot.....so do the boas. I use shedded aspen fo rmy ball pythons group but did not like how the boas were on the aspen......they seem to like the carefresh more as I see them all burrowing in it and they seem more relaxed & comfortable.

I like that it is very absorbent and it hold down odors when tey go to the bathroom as well. I am using the natural color(grey), the bleached color is a tad more expensive and ugly in my opinion.

Seems to be good stuff......

here is a pic of a happy boa on carefresh bedding

I like it, no flipping dust. I don't think it would be cost
effective for a 4 foot vision though. I need to check into the
Harlan prices. Their site doesn't list prices.

what effect have you noticed the aspen dust have on boas? How much is care fresh?

Their breathing seems a little laboured. I can hear them inhale
and exhale. It's not RI related.

It might be normal boa breathing, I've always used aspen. When I
clean cages which I just did the other day there is always a lot
more sawdust like stuff flying around than I like to deal with.

I just hate having to deal with that crap in the air...

Don't know about Harlan, but I use carefresh in my smaller cages and paper in the larger ones.

Carefresh is fairly cheap, especially if you buy the 'plain' colored (greyish tan) in a large bale, rather than the white or special colors.

I wouldn't use it for tiny snakes for fear of them injesting it, but for boas it works great. Just need to mist when getting near shedding time, because the stuff is very absorbent.

I stopped using aspen when my hog island male got a splinter of it stuck in between his nostrils and had to go to the vet to have the fatty pus and splinter removed.

But... it's not really cost effective in a very large cage.

Just my opinion!

I think it is called diamond soft, I use it and it works great, it is from harlan, more expensive but worth it.
