Caging or Racks?

PHFaust Oct 23, 2007 11:05 AM

Im picking up a few CB70 racks this weekend and I am debating if that is a better solution for the larger boy than the vision he is currently in. Has anyone noticed a change in behavior from front open to top open? Its probably too early to really determine that I have a cranky man since it has been a little over a week, but I do know he was previously in racks. I would personally prefer to keep him in the caging because I can regulate that heat better and the racks will work better with the millions of balls laying around my house, but if it would work better for him, Im willing to give it a shot.

The Bloods are personal pets and I really dont have the patience to deal with breeding. So this is just something Im debating as I get ready to get struck at. I do hear he is fine once we get him out of cage. Ill see.

I used to have my bloods in visions. I really liked them, but the humidity was a problem for me. I have my adult bloods in the HUGE iris tubs now. I think they are 52x20. My bloods seem to be doing very well in them. Its all personal preference. Cages are good for looking, but unless you tape up the vents or get some of the other types of cages(herp enclosures/boaphile/animal plastics) that don't have as much ventilation you're going to end up with shedding issues. Good luck.

We have had the heat running, and I dont see right now humidity being an issue. Then again I place a damp light weight towel over the vents every morning and night. I just know behavior with some lizards is affected by how the cage opens. I'm just getting my first rack system. It is proving that the one is rough getting out of cage, but is fine once out. I will keep a close look on their humidity tho. I do know they are very sensitive with that. I do have digital humidity meters spread through the room as well as temp guns to watch heat levels.

Thanks for that reminder with the humidity levels. With temps in the 40's, it is a concern.

I have had the same problem with front opening cages and my bloods. Kara and I have had this conversation before as well. Most of my "tame" animals are fine in rack setups(FB,Vision cb70,etc.), but if I put them in front opening visions, they turn crazy(striking at the glass, thrashing when you try to get them out,ect.). I think it has to do with too much visual stimulation?? I also think that when you are reaching IN to get them they become more defensive, rather than picking them up from a box.
BUT, I have 2 animals that were crazy in racks, and recently moved them to visions to see how they do, and they are actualy calming down??? So, I guess it depends largely on the animal. I will definately stick with FB jumbo racks for most of my adults though. God luck.

That is kinda what I was seeing here. I do know that he is a little fiesty. I have a feeling thats why Rich wanted to hold him for me. I have seen this behavior a lot with lizards but this is the first time I have seen with snakes. Feeding isnt an issue. Picked up at tinley on 10-15 and he has fed twice. Once during shed and once post shed. Once I get him out he seems to calm down nicely.
