theory on the double-clutch?!

fliptop Oct 23, 2007 11:18 AM

Just 'cause I love the discussions here:

My ratsnake laid a second clutch (without any additional mating) just days before her first clutch hatched.

Apparently this is a very common schedule (the second to drop as the first hatches).

Is this because the second clutch serves as prey distraction from the first, i.e., it would be easier for a raiding raccoon to catch and consume eggs rather than pursuing more active prey?

Any other ideas/possibilities?

Multiclutching is done to promote survival. Instead of one window of oppertunity, there is two or more. This is common with many reptiles.

Its also conditional, they may single clutch or multiclutch, depending of the year or years.

For instance, we had a very dry spring early summer, and most of the hatchlings did not survival. We had a wet monsoon(mid to late summer) and we are seeing lots of hatchlings now. And they appear to be surviving. This is with both snakes and lizards. Cheers
