Introducing Ol' Yeller.........

rainbowsrus Oct 23, 2007 12:07 PM

I got this male in last week on a breeding loan. He does not have an actual name but I'm gonna call him Ol' Yeller for now. He's from Anya at Snake Eyes Exotics.

Definitely a different looking BRB. Very light yellow colored animal. To me the outlines are too dark for it to be hypo but still, a very different looking BRB. We already have high red and high orange. Maybe we can have high yellow as well?

Thoughts? Opinions?

He looks fat Dave I enjoy the lighter animals myself and think Wilma and Popeye oh yeah. Who is his mate btw? I really like how the tops of his crescents don't go all the way around and just stop on some of the sides that is cool. That "mangled" dorsal pattern looks eye catching and also like the scattered speckles that reminds me much of the licorice boa in DM Dave but not to that extreme but very cool nonetheless. thanks for sharing and sorry again for all the ?'s I NEED INFOlol
Bob

p.s. if snakes could breed boy to boy I like Ol' Yeller and Porky

Hey Bob, Yeah, he don't look like he's missed any meals. Gonna weigh him before I feed him tonight (but not a large meal). Just for records so I know how big he was at the beginning of the loan. I figure my best options were to go with lighter colored females. To that end we agreed upon Cate and Nikki, two females I got from Jeff in a trade of 05' stock.

Nikki, pics from 2007/09/24

and Cate, OOpps, don't have any current pics, have one from 2006/04/06

Guess I need to take some new pics of Cate

>>Thoughts? Opinions?

Hmmm. He's interesting.

I have been looking at this post a few times today. At first when I was going to reply to this, my first response was that I didn't like him. With the spots on the top, he looks dirty. Personally, I prefer them darker, more towards "normal"

I think that this would be one snake that would have to "grow" on me. Do you think he is just lighter in color?

On another note, any pictures of the newest newborns?

Yeah, kinda my thoughts exactly. But I do tend to look at it from another direction. I wonder how that base color will look with other morphs. For example, Anery, would that base color make for a lighter adult animal, less browns to show through?

Over the several years I'll be experimenting with the morphs and what makes what!! I expect some (many?) of the trials may not work out real well but to find the ones that do, will be well worth it.

No pics yet, been busy feeding and caring for everyone. Over 200 snakes in the house now with all the babies!!

Either a thought provoking or stupid question: how do you know
Ol' Yeller isn't anery?

Well, Anery is generally accepted as an elimination of red. There is a strain of Anery that Brian Sharp is working with which really looks anery as babies but does tend to brown out as adults. One key point is the crescents are white.

Ol Yeller may very well be some sort of color morph. Could by a type 2 anery. Type 2 since there is already another known anery morph.

Obviously only breeding will tell.

Dave,

Sorry, I should have said "some form of anery." I've seen pictures of the Sharp strain and know that it looks a bit different. The reason I asked the question about Ol' Yeller is that maybe he has no red either, just brown and a more than normal amount of yellow pigment. So I was getting at the same thing - maybe another anery type, maybe another mutation controlling different areas of coloration. Who knows??

What really threw me off was that picture of the BRB albino (assuming it was a BRB and only albino mutation.) It had so little orange. Did you see the picture? Here's the link:

UGH, just lost a long reply..... so the short version...

Yeah, he might just have something going on so I'll be holding back some of the babies to see what they produce.

Seen the pic, have the book, even have two snakes in the book - Albino Arabesque BCI (my entry) and Calico BRB, Brian's entry but my animal now!!

I think the Albino BRB shown may be a lower color one. With color morphs the individual lines of animals can have very different looks. Take hypo for example, they range from rather plain yellows with little contrast to Bright tangerines with lots of contrast. Given time the albino will get improved upon!!

Cool snake. Hypoerythristic? Hyperxanthic?
We need to start coming up with some fancy/catchy names
for these variations, like it's done with other
species. Might help on the marketing end of the biz.

Thanks for the pics, that looks like another one that
needs to be seen in person to really see the true colors. So you can send it to me for a little while so I can get the full effect.
