Went snake herping in New England today. I was told this place I went to had a bunch of Northern Black Racers. I never caught a racer in NE. I caught waters, milks, garders, browns, greens, ringnecks, just never a racer. Well I caught my first black racer today. It was between 4-5ft. Bit me twice. After I caught it I put it down to see the real speed of this animal, and wow they are fast. It shot in a bush and spun around and shot back out in a different direction. Then went into some rocks, gone.
About 5 mins later I see another black snake under a small pine. So I walked around the tree to come up from behind and grabed its tail. Turned out to be a northern water snake. Then he went into the rocks so I let go. I first thought it was another racer. I also saw a total of 8 garden snakes. One was the largest garden snake I have ever seen. This garden snake had to been close to 4ft. Big head, bright yellow. But Im still pumped about the racer. He was the biggest snake out today. The water was about 3 1/2ft. The racer just wouldnt stop biting/trying to bite. It was on the ground and tryed to bite and threw its entire body in the air, almost getting me in the face. His head was about 3ft off the ground. It was about 70 - 75 degrees today. If we get another nice day here in MA again, then I will def go back and take my camera.
