Wont get fat???

Lamiellm Oct 23, 2007 04:58 PM

I have 4 females housed together in a 36"x12"x4" tub. There are two large hide spots with moist moss. one on the cooler side the other half on the heat half off. Thye have a couple other hide spots half logs for example and I find they like toilet paper rolls. I am feeding them small mealworms in two containers one on the cooler side the other the warmer side. They are shedding normally but their tails do not seem to be absorbing any fat from their meals. Any suggestions? Should I try some bigger mealworms??? They are about a year old and weighing about 30 grams on average. Thanks for any input!!

Well, assuming that you are giving them ample food, that is an, unfortunately clear, sign of parasites. If all the geckos are at the same amount of tail fat (meaning there is not dominance and some are fat and some are not) and you see mealworms leftover everytime you feed... I would get them to a vet as soon as possible, we had our first leo put to sleep because he never fully recovered from a parasite infection, however caught soon, easily treated. So, trip to the vet, good bleaching and rinsing of all cage furniture (throw out anything you can't) and you should be good to go.

I would also say that that seems a little small for that many geckos when they get bigger, but probably ok for now.

Also, just another thought, what are your warm/cool side temps? What are you using to dust/load the mealworms? Maybe I jumped to the wrong conclusion, but that just sounds so much like a parasite infection, you might want to rule that out anyways, even if something else is off. Good luck.

That tub does sound sound a little small for 4 one year old leos. And I hope you have a lid on that, 4 inches is not hard to scale for a leo, esp. if there aRE logs, etc. to climb on and out. And 30 grams is still a little small for that age. If they are eating all that you are feeding them, feed them more. If they are not eating everything, or one or two are eating most of it, you have a problem. Either parasites, or dominance, or both. How many mealwoms are they eating each?
