Unhappy Gecko..

AndrewFromSoCal Oct 23, 2007 06:09 PM

Squirt doesn't like his new 20g as much as he did his 10g. The 20g has the same plant he sat on in the 10g..except now said plant falls over, because he's fat and the dirt isn't as hard. I rarely see him walking around the cage, though we havn't had a cricket night lately, it's been all CGD (which no one seems to be eating a ton of)

I figure he'd like some more cover, which i'm trying to figure out (plants need so much dirt, which leaves little room for a drainage layer!) I may just have to buy some tacky fake plants..geh. Any other suggestions?

Well, definitely the thing I see over and over again with people's crested setup is it HAS to have lots of leaves, hides, and other dark places.

Don't overlook just putting some hides in, we found the perfect size plastic on in the hamster section of the pet store. Obviously, any way you make your hides for your leos would work, just watch out for mold if you have dirt and mist.

As for "tacky fake plants", gonna have to disagree. I love the idea of a natural enclosure, but when you lose a gecko to parasites, you only buy things than can be bleached. But no offense taken. Maybe you could try a fake or grape vine in the meantime and train a pothos (spelling?) to grow around it by wrapping?

Driftwood and other things are good. (Watch for mold.) We also have a hardwood parrot ladder for no other reason than she looks so cute with her belly hanging between the rungs of the ladder. (Ok, ok, it also gives her more horizontal surfaces to rest her hips, there is a scientific reason too... but you should see her when she is gravid and that belly!)

How long has the gecko been adjusting to its new home? Sometimes it takes a little time to get settled in. I agree that hides will help a gecko feel more comfortable.

As far as eating CGD, are you using the 2 part (1 part base, the other nectar)? If you are, you should be fine as this has been a huge success in my house. If you are not, try mixing in a bit of honey (about 30-40% of weight) and the geckos should eat it up
