Snake Rack Alternatives????

manog Oct 24, 2007 01:36 PM

I am sure that all of you have seen the storage racks that rubbermaid makes- the ones that at first glance look like killer snake racks? Obviousley upon closer inspection they are unsuited as they have large gaps near the lid.

My question is has anyone succesfully modified these to make them snake proof? If so how did you do it?

Also, i saw some iris tubs that are singles that can stack. These look like they would work without any modification at all. They are the large single stackers made by Iris in the Lowes storage isle. Anyone using these?

I am going to pick a few up and see how they work. It looks like heat cable/ tape would be easy to install on these as they have open bottoms.

These look like clean, light weight, and affordable alternatives to the traditional snake rack.

Here is what they kind of look like.. the ones at lowes are little different and cost about $12 a peice. They look like they are about 30 quarts...

I have seen people use the 1st ones you spoke of for young boas and ball pythons. The gaps in some models are too small for these snake to escape, so they work with no modification. For colubrids, forget it.

I like the box size of some of those larger units for snakes like rosies/sandboas. Just perfect. I even tried to make my own lids for just the box part. I did an OK job.

The problem with those single units is that although they are tight at the front, there are significant gaps at the rear and sides of the top of the tray. This means snakes could get out into the space between the tray and the housing and could be injured when the drawer is pulled out.

It isn't hard to make a secure and stable rack out of wood, even with no woodworking skills.

Thanks Chris - i have built my own racks before- i just like the idea of these lightweight pre-made racks- but you are right- those gaps are too big for colubrids.

thanks,

Chris
