Sick crested gecko???

myotismn Oct 24, 2007 05:31 PM

I would appreciate any thoughts on what might be going on with my crested gecko. I have a pair (13months old) that I keep in a 29gal tank. It has a cyprus mulch substrate and fake plants and pvc tubes for hiding. I feed them Repashy diet and usually put crickets in as well. The cage is kept at room temp, usually about 72-75 and I mist it every couple days.

The problem is my female. For the past several weeks she has been acting odd. She doesn't seem skinny but she does look flabby. She also seems to act sluggishly and have much more limited control of herself. When I take her out (I don't do this too often) she acts like she is having difficulty climbing. I have not seen her climb the walls of the tank lately either. When she is hiding during the day she seems like she is in a daze and props herself up on something. I have seen her eat and drink regularly so I know she is eating and drinking. The male appears to be behaving normal. Anyone have any thoughts what might be going on with her?

i have a baby gecko that is acting almost identical to how your female is acting. it's so sad to watch. i wish there was something i could do, but i don't even know what's wrong with him. i just switched him to a bigger cage, so i figured he was acclimating. i'm starting to get really worried. i don't want him to die

do you put crickets in every night and are thay dusted with pure calcium and do you gut load them, also can you tell if he limbs are swollen or if she is gravid. she might just be waiting for crickets and filling up on them not eating the cgd and if not dusted, and she is gravid she could be having a calcium crash, or may be in the early stages of mbd i would cut down to 2-3 crickets once a week and make sure thay are gut loaded, and dusted i recommend using ether a pure calcium dust or leopard gecko dust, and if u can take a fecal sample to a vet to test for internal parasites. do all this and you should see an improvement in health if not take her to a reptile vet which u might want to do anyway

First, make sure you have all the basics covered. You spoke about the temperature, which seems fine. Are you misting the enclosure?
I'm not real familiar with cyprus mulch (as I don't believe it is used that much by crested keepers) but is there a chance that the gecko could have injested some and could be impacted? If you are feeding crickets, there is a higher chance that she took in a mouthful while catching a cricket.
Finally, here is an article on Entamoeba invadins.

Thanks for the suggestion. I regularly mist the cage every couple days. The cyprus impaction is not a possibility I considered before. However she is continuing to eat so I am not sure about that one. I have had several people tell me that they use cyprus mulch and it is suggested on crestedgecko.com, so I assumed it was a good substrate. Thanks for the article as well, but it doesn't sound the same as it describes the symptoms as rapid and my crested geckos syptoms have been occuring for a few weeks. Adela303, how is yours doing??
