Thinking of a kingsnake...

newstorm Oct 24, 2007 08:02 PM

I really like the looks of a Florida King. They have always impressed me. I have read some stuff on them, but just wanted to hear some more info on keeping them possibly from some owners.

I currently have a blackthroat monitor, 5 bearded dragons, a jungle carpet python, and a dumerils boa. My experience with reptiles is pretty good, and i think i am ready to get some more!!

Help me decide.

A few words on the Florida kings (aka Brooks kings)

1)Bullet proof
2)Hard to Kill
3)Does everything you want a snake to do (east easily, breeds easily)
4)Handles easy (calm disposition)
5)Perfect Size. Not to gig and not to small (adults fit in sweater box racks).
6)Can handle high humidity (spilled water bowls ect)

I've never dealt with FL kings.
More of a Eastern King person.
But, bullet proof? :/

"east" easily and not too "gig." Wow Rainer, is that some kind of cool new language. I have some kings that are not too "gig" either. lol

Bluerosy Oct 25, 2007 06:36 PM

ahh, I have no response to that

Hey Jeff,

I have a growing collection of fl kings, and i love it.
If you like the colors of florida kings, take a look at the morphs being produced they are amazing. FL kings are still comming out with fantastic new looks, it's worth looking in to.

Life moves pretty fast, if you dont stop and look around once and a while,... you could miss it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback. Sounds like this could be my next snake. I have some caging plans to house all my stuff (minus the blackthroat) in one room, leaving one cage free.
I really think a Florida king is for me, thanks again.

My Florida King was my first snake (of two) and my other one is a Kisatchie corn. They're both cool, but the Florida's temperament is just really great. She is bullet proof and although she does escape from time to time, I recently discovered she just does that so she can go out and fight crime.

She also loves to do this.

Good eye Steve, #12 is a PB. I was exceptionally busy this season and sold off some babies befoe getting pix. Times like this remind of how I should have taken some! Oh well. I am sure I can find more to photograph in the ol snake room. Tom Stevens

I agree. Florida kings are one of the best snakes you could own. Here's a few pics of mine.
NE Axanthic from Brandon Osborne. And a 66 percent het hypo from Tom Stevens. Good luck, and post pics if......WHEN you get one.

Both eastern and brooks are great. Seems Brooks is the "in" snake these days, I always liked it.
I have both and they are great in every way. My eastern always wants to be held...lol

Just be cautious if your interested in actual species or even subspecies. There are lots of people selling kings and corns (and other species) that are mis-represented. If you don't care what species your getting and are just after "pretty snakes" then nothing to worry about.

But if you actually want to know what species of snake your buying, do your research. There are, for example, aberrant eastern kings for sale now in the classifieds that are some curious cross, but the seller isn't being honest by not disclosing this fact.

This dishonesty is, unfortunately, commonplace. People are cross breeding all sorts of stuff looking to make it rich on the next "new thing" but they have to unload all the junk they produce on unsuspecting customers.

Look into sellers history, if you care.

They look like they have cal king in them

Nokturnel Tom Oct 26, 2007 02:58 PM

Those Cal Kings have Florida King in them!
Now let's go in circles til this goes nuts as usual and then starts over again, and again, and again.
No wait..........let's not
