question regarding burms and dogs

mezmerize Oct 25, 2007 12:17 AM

just wondering if any of you also own dogs and how you go about having a burm in the same house as a dog.

i only keep balls, corns and one boa so i dont know much about burms but is having burm in the same house a concern?

uhhh... in our house- the dogs are the last thing in the world that would be in "danger"... we have german shepherds so i guess it all depends on what kind of dog you have... I have a cat- rather STILL have a cat. snakes come out- she goes off and hides- we have ferrets- the snakes and ferrets arent in the same room and i've never been bit by a big snake around the ferrets... i have a bird... one of our burms came in eating roosters and wont eat rabbits for me yet... cockatoo/rooster/food/whatever- still not been bit...

i am a firm believer on fed snakes- not over fed- just NOT under fed... never had a problem... if the snake isn't hungry... why would it 'eat' your dog?

I've got german shepherds & burmese pythons, too. My dogs stay outside, though. When I take my snakes outside some of my dogs have to come check it out but I run them off. My male shepherd weighs about 100 pounds but I guarantee you that it wouldn't be a bit of problem for either my 9ft or 10ft burmese to grab & kill him.

On the same token, it wouldn't be a bit of problem for my male shepherd to grab one of my snakes & kill it, either.

For the sake of any dog, I suggest keping the dog away from the snake while the snake's out of it's cage. There should be no issues while the snake is in it's cage, unless the dog is in the cage with it, of course.

For the sake of you & your family, make sure you wash arms & hands before handling snake so it didn't confuse dog scent as prey. I had a 4ft corn try to swallow my son's arm because he had been handling a cat beforehand.

The snakes should become pretty much oblivious to any inside dog it sees on a regular basis. It won't be continuously trying to get out to eat the dog.

I hope I understood your question and gave you the answer you were looking for. If not, set me straight and I'll try again. Ha! Ha!

Take care!

I have an Australian Shepherd and two cats, along with a Burm and other snakes. I check cage locks every night. When the snake comes out, I make sure the other pets are put up...curiosity killed the cat and all. I've never had a prey response from any of my snakes from cats and dogs being around, but I have had help from the cats in finding a loose snake. I just play it safe and keep the furries put away so no one tries to get anyone else.

I agree with HH. I have to Rotts one 100 lbs and the other 85. That was always my biggest fear. No matter how big the dog is, the snake is the perfect killing machine as long as it can get a coil around. I never let the two get even close to eachother. The snake came out and the dogs went away. I even get that way when they are little. I can hold them and the dogs do not need to be locked up but at the same time I do not let them get near me. Its just safer for the snake and the dog not to get close, because one never knows what will happen. As for smell, I guess since the dogs are on me already it has not been a problem, I do not own any other fuzzies but if I did, I would for sure take a bath before I held the snake. Thats just me though.

We have two dogs and two cats. The dogs are outside most of the time and the cats don't usually stick around when we bring a snake out. Although the other night I hade one of my dwarf burms laying on my lap and one of the cats was hellbent to jump up on my lap with the snake and me. Michelle had to run the cat downstairs. I thought he was toast for sure.

> > > As for smell, I guess since the dogs are on me already it has not been a problem,...

Yeah, when I read that I agreed and I had to think back about what I first said & why. With my dogs being outside dogs and I do pet them fairly often. I imagine that their scent is still on me somewhat when I do handle my snakes because I don't just automatically wash up before handling snakes.

I think the reason I said something about washing with an inside dog is due to higher chance of petting the dog/cat right before handling snake. Heck, who knows what I was actually thinkin'? Ha! Ha!

Man, I sure as heck hope I didn't say anything that could be taken argumentively here. Seems like no matter what I say, what forum I say it in, somebody's got an axe to grind with me & I'm too quick to oblige. I don't know how many more punches my monitor can take. Hahahahaha!!!

Ya'll take care!

Just kidding,

The two dogs I have are inside dogs. I use to but that antibatercial stuff on before I touched each snake. My Boa bites me just because, well maybe that just because I smell like a dog, because when I wear a sweatshirt and gloves she has never attempted to bite me.

Scary thing is when I say I have not had a problem yet, and I hope I never do and each snake is different and is exposed to differnt smells and reacts different.

So, no you have very valed points, and as far as people getting on you well, they need to understand that these forums are what people have gone through, not everyone is an expert, and some are just close minded to see another point of view. Its better to discuss then to argue. You have what works and they have what works, as long as the animal is taken care of and heathly then maybe there is two ways. Hahahahaha

Feel free to build me one of those cages anytime. I can make a box, but I do not want to try the doors.

So your boa knows when not to waste a strike, eh? Ha! Ha! That's the way it goes.

Nah, I have to be honest; Here lately I've pretty much asked for it with my smart mouth. This time it's me, for the most part. But dang, I swear that mole hill looked like Mount Everest. Hahahahaha!!! That's what lil' sleep, physical & mental exhaustion will do. But it's still not an excuse, is it "GrotesqueBurgess"?

Take care!

Yep, it's a perfect excuse. But honestly, I still stand by what I said before, I'm just too worn out to keep arguing about it. I guess YOU really enjoy it though. To me, it got talked to death, and I'm bored with it. I'm not enlightened by you or anything, so, enough?

I'm interupting my self-imposed leave of absence from the forums just to attempt to clear the air here.

First off, the only mention of you in the above reply was "That's what lil' sleep, physical & mental exhaustion will do. But it's still not an excuse, is it "GrotesqueBurgess"? "

I didn't address anything that you and I had discussed earlier.

Secondly, since that whole paragraph was about me being wrong, me causing, or asking for, trouble, I was saying that my lack of sleep, metal/physical exhaustion was not an excuse for the way I acted in our discussion. Not you.

While I accept those things as an excuse for someone else to get huffy with me or with another person, I try not to let it be MY excuse for MY actions.

Thirdly, I was not talking about you, I was trying to include you, invite you, to join in on other threads that aren't debates. I was trying to make you feel comfortable, welcomed, that's all. Why else, out of the blue, would I post a reply to one of your posts just to ask you how midterms were going? I call it hospitality, showing that I had absolutely nothing against you and welcomed your participation here, even though we don't agree on a thing or two.

You said, "To me, it got talked to death, and I'm bored with it."

Please remember that I had said earlier that I felt it couldn't be hashed out any more, and I haven't tried to dig it back up. You see, I buried it, but here it is again. And my paws are clean.

Please also notice that the post I made that you were replying to was made Oct. 26, 2007. That's over a week ago. And again, nothing in that thread was about anything we had discussed previously.

You ended you post with, " I'm not enlightened by you or anything, so, enough?" Enough about what? Well, since I know now that you're not enlightened by me I guess I had might as well stop trying to make you feel welcomed and not try to encourage your participation here.

So, yeah, enough.

For everyone else, the reason I'm taking a leave of absence is due to behavior that keeps showing up in my posts that I normally don't say or do. I've got a lot going on and sometimes that makes me be a real smart a--.

And now I've got to try to get my life in order again after it just being shattered by finding out that "GB" is not enlightened by me. Oh woest me! What on earth will I do? And to think that for this reason God brought me into this world and onto this forum. Oh, woest me!!!

HappyHillbilly Oct 26, 2007 10:41 AM

That made me think about how grateful I am that my dumerils boa doesn't get to burmese size. Wow! Talk about a fast strike & constrict. That sucker scares the crap out of me just about every time he grabs a rat.

OK, OK, stay on topic you dumb ol' hillbilly. On topic.
