Elephant trunk snake...

onitora Aug 23, 2003 04:14 AM

There are what, three species of these? I only want one. BADLY. Don't get me wrong, I'd love a pair to breed, especially since you can skip the incubation proccess, but I'd at least be satiated with one. Where can I get one? I've looked high and low and come up empty handed. Any ideas? Anyone?

Almost all elephant trunk snakes are wild caught. The two you find in the pet trade are the pygmy file snake and the Arafura file snake. The pygmy one gets about 2-3 feet, the larger one 5-6. They grow and breed very slowly from what I understand, so this is probably why they're not captive bred very often- that, and fully aquatic snakes aren't very popular. The third species, which is from Australia, only breeds every 10 years. You just have to keep your eyes on the classifieds. They show up in 'Boas' and 'Colubrids and other snakes' (Of course, they are 'other snakes'). Importers in Florida will have them from time to time. As a note, if you like elephant trunk snakes, you may also like snakes in the subfamily Homalopsinae, such as the puff faced water snake and the tentacled snake. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

I haven't seen one in 30 years! I saw one in a pet store when I was a kid and wanted it in the worst way, but couldn't afford it. Haven't seen one since, sorry. Good luck!

Email me and let me know where you are. There is one in a pet shop near me. It's a baby, at about maybe a foot long.
