Hauling Boas 3000 miles!!

Brocks Boids Oct 25, 2007 06:08 AM

Hey Jeff those boxes look familiar?

Well after two years out in Vegas I'm back in NJ and it's good to be home, my Boas are loving the humidity again. With 60 Boas in the van and a generator running in the toolbox on the front of the trailer (it sounded like a go cart was chasing me, lol) to keep them warm at night it was a long trip back. I almost had to leave some Boaphiles there but came up with the rack on the van at the last minute and it worked great, I wind tested it to 85 mph. The plywood airdam looked cheesey but did the job and nothing moved. That's 11 421d's on the roof and more in the trailer. It was a beast to drive though.

With my whole collection in the van I was afraid to leave it so I only made two sleep stops on the way home and slept sitting up behind the wheel at truck stops both times. The nice Federal Officers would not let me a across the Hoover Dam because of the cages (a security risk, unreal) so my 3000 mile trip started with a 145 mile detour around it. Then I dipped down south almost to Mexico to pick up my Bull Mastiff pup in Wilcox Arizona and then straight home to Jersey from there. 48 hours of driving and I was home in 55 hours, I hope I never have to do another one of these drives.

This is how she spent most of the trip. I'm glad she was comfortable because her cage in the front seat was the reason I slept sitting up.

And a Boa pic to keep things on topic.

Welcome back to Joysey! Glad you made the trip safely, and the pooch definitely looked like he was comfortable ! I did the same drive from AZ to NJ about 10 years ago - not fun. Looking forward to some post-move shots of some of those 60 snakes!

everytime you tell this story...

I did something similar a couple months back...

half the distance, but did the trip twice! So I can relate!

and just THINKING about it after it was done would make my brain hurt!

Glad it turned out well, and I presume everyone and everything was accounted for.

I actually lost one boa along the way... I actually think it crawled up the dash and out the motor compartment while on the highway! Poor thing!
Glad it wasn't an adult! LOL Imagine that?

FLYING SNAKES ON THE HIGHWAY!!!! AAHHHH!!!!!

LOL

I know you'll agree with me on this...

NO PLACE LIKE HOME!

Take care Brother!

I slept for 2 days after I got home and unpacked the Boas. My back still hurts thinking about sleeping sitting in the van again, lol.

I lost two real nice het Albinos on the trip, they were siblings to my Hypo Motleys this year. I went out in the winter and the floor of my van stayed cool. It was hot when I left and I didn't know it but one rack was over the cataletic converter in the exaust and with my first run 12 hours straight it cooked the floor right under them. I lost the two hets in the bottom of the rack and felt horrible. I had a Sharp Sunglow and a Hotley that were fine in the rack next to it so I got lucky money wise but I was hoping everybody made the trip.

Flying snakes huh? lol I just picture a big pile up behind you on the highway when it hit the windshield of the guy following you.

Thanks, Brock

That's awesome. I just moved last year from Vegas back to the good old bay area, CA. Vegas was an alright place to live for 3 years but it sure feels good to be back home. You're not kidding how happy the snakes are to have better humidity!
Luckily I only have about 20 snakes. A friend drove the U-haul with cages (and my stuff) while I drove the car with all the critters inside. I can't imagine doing as long of a trip that you had to! I bet you got some strange looks along the way!

and I had a blast living there the two years but it's good to be out. You have to live there to really underastand that one and I know you probably feel the same. I never lived in a place before where everybody had a time frame to be there and an escape plan to get out, nobody wants to stay.

Thanks, Brock
