They are hatching: Siphlophis compressus

I took out their box and did not notice anything much and saw a tiny scrach on one egg and thought it might be just dirt. I looked closer and realized it was from a snake inside the egg. I almost passed out from excitement and my heart jumped a few notches but then looked in the corner of the box and saw this below sitting there in a small coil. What a beauty. This was several years to get to this point with keeping dehydrated and weak imports kicking.

Now I have to sweat it out for 5 more to hatch.

Nice looks like your hard work paid off!

Ok, this is the venemous forum. Lots of talk about being responsible, getting a mentor, etc. Then I see a post from a very active user of the forum with a venemous hatchling in his hand. So, I'm confused, please explain.
From the shape of the head on the snake it looks to be venemous and ready to go.

They are rear fanged and not harmful to humans although on second thought it was not a good idea to post a photo of it in my hand despite adults never bite even when restrained. I actually make a point to not hold rear fangs for photos to be posted and forgot in this instance with the excitement of them being born that posting it in hand regardless of its ineffective delivery system is not a good idea so good catch.

Thanks for the info and for not over reacting to my post. Of the rear fanged snakes that I have seen I can't recall ever seeing one with such a triangulated head.
Just curious, do you know if that snake/species can be brought in to California?
thanks

Oxyrhopus Oct 26, 2007 09:48 AM

I believe they allow rear fanged species but check with the wildlife office to be sure.

Cali law only forbids specific rear fanged not be brought into the state. Boomslangs and twig snakes are banned. Pretty much just the ones that have already been known to cause fatal bites.

Awesome snakes though, how big do they get?

Oxyrhopus Oct 26, 2007 01:42 PM

momma is 4 foot long but I've seen 5 foot plus ones.

Damn these are nice.
Congrats Dan.

It's a shame that they feed on lizzards only, em I right? There's sure some really intresting non-pitviper sp. in middle/southern America but many of those have specific diet, like Sibon etc.
