Mating tortoises

beckys Oct 25, 2007 08:32 AM

About 3 years ago we recieved 2 cherry head dwarf torts. One is male and female and they have been mating. Today, I saw that they had coupled, in the past he has tried but never seemed to complete the job. What should I do now? They have been very healthy and are a good weight and have been growing well.
Thanks for any help.

I know there are people selling some cherryheads as dwarves but that designation is in dispute. How big are they? Some activity identified as breeding is actually dominance behavior.
However, if they have successfully "coupled" there is nothing to do but provide a suitable egg-laying area for the female and ensure that an adequate supply of calcium is available to replenish losses due to egg production. Good luck.

Definately male and female. She laid an egg overnight. Of course I am not ready!
I am going to get a chicken egg incubator this am. She laid this one in the feed dish, so I am not hopeful it is fertile, but will give it a chance anyway.
Thanks for the calcium tip.
