Hognose activity

aggrocroc Oct 25, 2007 11:56 AM

Well I've finally given up on trying to keep Eastern hognoses legally in PA (pretty much can't be done and they won't allow any kind of permit thing or anything...just a "NO", so now I'm looking at Mexicans or Southerns. I have a question though. I liked Easterns because they seem to be fairly active or at least visible snakes, and was wondering what Southerns and Mexicans are like? Basically what it comes to is that I like to walk into my herp room and see the snakes that I'm keeping. All my snakes are in large, display type cages, and I hate it when it appears that I've just got an empty cage that I feed mice to. I have that problem right now with my L.m.thayeri and I really don't want any more snakes like that. Currently I work with three different subspecies of T.sirtalis, and they're VERY visable. I'm not expecting hogs to be like garters, but still don't really want a snake that's going to hide all the time. Just wanted to find out what the Mexicans and/or Southerns are like before I sink any money into them.

Thanx.......Roy

My westerns are visible, I would say, 25% of the time, which is pretty good for a semi-fossorial snake, in my opinion.

I,living in Va. have a similar problem. It's legal to possess 5 or less eaterns and their is no permit to breed or sell.I still have a nice pr. of easterns but,my favorites are my mexican hog pr. and my southerns.Mine are very visible especially when they are looking for something to eat. With these guys, that pretty much all the time!l.o.l. I have 2 Southerns 1.1 the Male for 4 years now. They do prefer to hide but are active if hungry.

My western female is very active and visible much of the time, but my male hides ALL the time.

I have three western hognose snakes housed together. Between the three of them, at least one is usually visible...
