Okay, so, a couple of weeks ago I started stock-piling leaves in the turtle pen so that I'd have plenty on hand when I refurbished the hibernacula for the upcoming winter.
I managed to complete one a couple of days ago (YAY!), and used most of leaves, but then I found something kind of funny when I got to the bottom of the leaf pile:

lol, so they were in the PRE-hibernacula, they didn't want to wait for your refurbishing of the hibernaculum, apparently they didn't get the memo

the variability of the shell markings is incredible, are these guys all from the same area?

StephF Oct 26, 2007 10:27 AM

All but one is from the same tract (now a parking lot).

Steph,
Good job. I've often wondered about boxies ( and other wildlife)when I pass a parcel that is being "developed"(Destroyed?). How, where and when do you perform the rescue? I won't bore you with the details of how i acquired my 2 adults, but I am very concerned with the thoughtless clearcutting and clearing that is ocuring in my locale. Thanks.

a few years ago i started sending letters to local contruction companies informing them of my ability to help with rescuing turtles. I stated that they have a job to do and i understadn that their clearcutting is not always their choice and sure enough with a week i hade three companies calling stating they have found some and if i would help out.

nice work! so you simply had to pick them up and relocate. do you ever actively search an area that is being "developed" ?

Keep up the good work.

JOE
